What you find is that each Recycle Bin, on each drive, is simply a place where the system can move the directory entry for the file without having to copy it when you delete it. So that's not gonna be an approach.
But I really do think that CCleaner should be working properly for you. If it doesn't SDelete's a good alternative. CCleaner - Windows Cleaning Tool CCleaner is a popular and highly regarded tool for cleaning files, history, cookies, and much more from your computer.

Hi Leo Interesting question for me despite being an OAP Up until you answer, my opinion was that if one did watch a video of the delicious Pamela Anderson and then deleted it and then ran Recuva, you might see the name come up IE Pamela Anderson but no content would be available.
Could be totally wrong on this one. I concur that CCleaner generally does a good job, and that it needs to be used for cleaning before one goes for a free-space wipe. This puts Recycle Bin and its implications out of the equation, together with Recuva.
It has various options for how many times the space is wiped. It will also wipe file tips, virtually eliminating anything besides your files. It's portable and extremely effective. If you have a question, start by using the search box up at the top of the page - there's a very good chance that your question has already been answered on Ask Leo!.

Helping people with computers Wiping free space So, a couple of comments on this: CCleaner does wipe the free space. What I'm concerned about is that, perhaps, the files you're seeing come back when you run Recuva weren't really deleted: Maybe they were in the Recycle Bin; Maybe they were temporary files; Maybe they were internet browser cache files.
Seven wipes For the record, seven wipes is way overkill: One wipe will do. Three wipes if you're paranoid. Seven wipes is, in my opinion, a waste of time. Secure delete If, for whatever reason, you can't get CCleaner's wipe to work, there is another utility called SDelete.
That should give you the same result that CCleaner did. Files not deleted If it does give you the same result that CCleaner did, I'm going to stick with my original assertion that the files that Recuva is recovering for you weren't really deleted in the first place.
I still haven't given any, but that's how it works. Now the More Reply Options is not working. Connection closed by remote server. Post is not working either. Copy, paste to Bean and try later.
To wipe the free space, CCleaner fills it all with a blank file and deletes the blank file. This causes recovery programs to recover the blank file instead of the files that were there previously. I think it's time the devs gave some direct input regarding the problems you guys are having with CCleaners Wipe Free Space feature.
I can only comment on the feature in Windows, but one thing I have just confirmed is that Wipe Free Space does the job in two entirely different ways, depending upon how it's launched, and I don't know if this is the same with your Mac version.
So if this isn't happening with your Macs, you need to look for either a single numerically named file, or a similarly named folder containing the stuff shown above. I have no idea as to whether the Mac has dual options like this, and if not, which method it may be using.
As I mentioned in one of the other threads, there are freeware programs out there which enable you to seek out and display every file and folder in every location on your computer, which will help hopefully in finding where your free space has gone.
This in the recent past has unknowingly to the folk who weren't aware of this, eaten up drive space of comps running Vista and Win7. In the meantime, I will point the devs to this thread as it does appear that WFS is not working as it should.
Not being a Mac user, I couldn't have put it any better. I stopped the process of deleting free space as I suddenly looked and thought that it was literally erasing all my memory on my hardrive I only have about 8MB of free space left.
I had this issue and found the "rouge" temporary file in the trash. What a POS app that would eat up all available hard drive space and not clean up after itself. Will never use this product again. I had tried the Erase Free Space feature bug?
At least I had the option of using Firewire Target Disk Mode on that machine and was able to remove some files to free up enough space for the laptop to finally boot up. I hope this will help and spare anyone else the frustration of trying to solve this issue in the future.
The easiest way in my opinion is to remove this application from your machine and not waste anymore time discussing or thinking about it. ZERO out of 5 Stars! It's the Macs own utility which deposits the file into the trash area, which I find amazing as free space is lost until that file is deleted from the Trash.
So there will be and are many many Mac users experiencing this same problem having never had CCleaner on their system. If left running to completion, then maybe this Mac "Erase Free Space" feature cleans up after itself and removes the "rogue" file from the trash.
I don't have a Mac so can't try it. Or maybe Apple should have a look at it's "Erase Free Space" feature as it doesn't appear to clean up after itself if interrupted. I'm in the same boat now except I can't boot my mac up at all..
I started a 7 pass erase and I noticed it was rapidly using up the 50GB memory on my HD to create a temp file so I freaked out thinking my poor old mac would be forced into early alzheimers and force quit CC.
What I didn't realise was that CC kept creating the "temp file" in the background and pilfering my memory so.. I tried to look for the CC 'Temp file' to delete that to recover my memory but to no avail so I read someone else with the same problem had just restarted their mac and it fixed it..
My macbook pro is late, I know it's old but I've looked after it really well and gutted if I have to get a new HD and reinstall and start ALL over again!! I run snow leopard..
I know I know.. Is it a case that the temp file is still being created and if I wait long enough it will boot up? OR has it just used up all my memory and now my mac has no memory to reboot?? Last time I looked there was 11GB available.
K so I eventually managed to get into single user then used disk utility to verify and repair disk.. Off to mac store as I've wasted enough time already. I am also an Imac user and as i am writing this my current space on my hdd is around 9.
I worried at first but i then remembered the process ccleaner is doing. CCleaner right now is filling up the free space with 0's which is empty bytes it does this to clear any files and then deletes it. This is as the Storage works like layers of sand coloured sand being files and the yellow sand being empty or zeros.
What it does is cover your free space with yellow sand, only to put another layer delete it of empty space this is so that the computer cant recover the layer of files you have covered up. After three years plus, I doubt it.

Similar to CCleaner, it also 4 wiping methods which is 1, 3, 7 and 35 passes. File Shredder, as its name suggests, it is a free tool meant for shredding single and multiple files including free disk space with Windows shell right click integration.
A new window will open where you can select the disk to wipe and the secure algorithm to use. Click the Next button and then Start. File Shredder supports 5 types of algorithm which is 1, 2, DoD, 7 and Gutmann 35 passes. The simple two pass option that is not available on most other tools would be a fine choice if you want a good balance between time and speed.
Disk Redactor is another simple utility that wipes away deleted files. To start the secure delete, click on the Wipe Disk button and select the drive or folder. Although not mentioned anywhere, we strongly believe that Disk Redactor uses 1 pass because the licensed version can enable 2 passes option.
Logically this means that the free version should be using a less secure algorithm compared to the paid version. Simply type the command below and followed by the path to the directory or even the root of the drive letter.
The advantage in using the cipher. There is no need to continually wiping the free disk space on your computer because it will only increase the wear and tear of the drive and reduce its lifespan especially on SSD drives.
What you can do is, wipe the unused free disk space once using any of the software listed above depending on your requirements on the algorithm, then start managing sensitive data in an encrypted container created by TrueCrypt or any other reliable encryption software.
A refreshed SSD will run nearly as good as new again! DBAN wipes drives completely and leaves nothing behind. I used the default Windows Cipher command on a GB external 2. They were NOT able to recover any of the more than gb of music files in a usable form.
To be clear, they DID start with a list of the filenames that had been wiped. The Program they were using is called R-Studio, and is supposedly effective on modern drives of under 1TB capacity, on a variable scale.
The greater the drive density, the more difficult to recover securely deleted data. I plugged the drive back into my laptop at home, and copied all the previously deleted files back to the portable drive, and then ran CCCleaner with the 7-pass option.
LEO were still able to get file fragments, including a few discernible images. The last time I ran Eraser with the Gutmann option. It took 27 hours to run the Gutmann processs on this external 2.
Afterwards, LEO was unable to retrieve any usable data within 48 hours using their normal automated process. Were those recoverable images originaly stored in JPG format? I suposo music was in mp3 compressed so it was difficult to retrieve with missing pieces of information.
I was directed to this site because I discovered that an external drive I use for a lot of projects had all the previously deleted data easily recoverable. Well, after 3 passes, every file that was recoverable before was just as recoverable after.
Thanks for the heads up about Cipher. I Agree with you. Gutman etc advanced cleaners has any sense only on low capacity rotated disks. This is a list of FREE tools, neither of those you mention are free. Privacy Guardian was also discontinued several years ago.
Another option is or was Drive Scrubber by Iolo you have to buy their software for it to work But they just took the wipe free space option out making it useless. I used them for 3 years with no problem until they took the wipe free option out.
Now all they have is the options to completely erase data, and why pay for that when the data can be erased for free. There wipe free option had 2 ways of cleaning, you could either sweep the drive or do it by overwriting the space and would not leave your drive with overwritten files.
Any recommendations for something similar to wipe Linux systems of any free storage. I have several Terabyte drives that I need to do this too. With non random erasing it is easier to recover the data underneath. The density of modern hard drives makes it impossible to recover data from any overwriting.
A single pass of 0x00 is fine to prevent recovery of the overwritten data. A couple of years ago there was a company who said they could recover data from an overwritten hard drive.
They got offers from several data recovery companies who each pitched in lots of money for the company to prove its claim. If you are going to recover any sectors from a wiped hard drive it will have to be the translated sectors from the G-list that had data on them before they were marked as bad.
Modern hard drives for the purpose of this discussion would be considered drives that use PMR technology perpendicular magnetic recording. Most hard drive manufacturers switched from the previous technology longitudinal recording to perpendicular recording between So it is manufacturer and model specific.
I don't like the term urban legend. I believe Gutmann's paper was relevant when it was published. Posted 23 December - Here's an interesting read Programs employ a variety of techniques to overwrite data.
In Gutmann asserted that it might be possible to recover overwritten data and proposed a pass approach for assured sanitization Gutmann However, a single overwriting pass is now viewed as sufficient for sanitizing data from ATA drives with capacities over 15 GB that were manufactured after NIST Cipher program by default will wipe a pass of 0's pass of F's and a pass of random in compliance to the DoD standard established in However, you can also use this command to set how many passes, Format C: So that becomes a pass as well.
It's just new data going over old data, but the old data was already scrambled. Give it a few more years and SSD will replace spindle drives all together. Unless something else comes along, which I have no doubt.
