Windows 7 Ultimate X64 SP1. A 3 pass overwrite used to be DoD standard but was found to be recoverable with some common methods so the 7 pass was developed. Peter Gutman developed the algorithmic 35 pass which is supposed to wipe the last trace of any data so it can't be recovered by any means including electron microscopic examination.

Even those here who believe the hype surrounding the recovery of overwritten data say you need specialist hardware to do it, not just some "trippy utilities". A clean room and a spin stand tester are normal requirements for retrieving data from overwritten HDDs.
I've never knownt it done without the flash hardware. Its a myth that any more than a 1 pass delete will do. Back in the days of mag tapes, the physical delete was not reliable. They write very reliablely and hence, they overwrite very reliably.
A spin stand tester is used to forensicaly examine hard drive platters. When the overwrite stripes don't exactly line up with the previous write there can end up a very thin edge to the write stripe where the origininal data can be read.
This requires a smaller than standard magnetic head which requires special positioning adjustment. But I'm sure you could have googled that. The best description I could find is here in section 4.
It might have been theoretically possible on really old type of drives, but it's never been properly or repeatably demontrated on them either. This doesn't claim overwritten data can be recovered either, in fact it explicitly dis - claims it, perhaps you ought to read it ;.
This doesn't claim overwritten data can be recovered either, in fact it explicitly dis-claims it, perhaps you ought to read it ;. Yeah I read it. It says that it is not commercially viable to do it and results have never been publicly displayed.
It doesn't say it can't be done. This is stuff that is only in the realm of criminal forensics and national security. I'll see if I can find a link. In modern hard disks this does not happen. The head exactly tracks the previously written data.
Any signal left from previous writes would be very unreliable. I've honestly never seen the point of CCleaner and the likes. As for unrecoverable deletion, I'm sure there are better utilities I recommend Eraser from personal experience:.
I have some sensitive documents on a 'Pool' laptop which i want to ensure are unrecoverable. In a failed hard disk drive, the disk surface may or may not be damaged. If the disk is not physically damaged, the user's data is still there, unless it has been overwritten.
It is very telling that the US Department of Defense's Combating Terrorism Technology Support Office recently placed a "Broad Agency Announcement" seeking just such a magic machine for damaged, erased, or overwritten media [8].
Can you find a single verifiable link that shows that overwritten user data has been recovered from a modern hard disk? Well, I can't find an article showing a real world example of this being done but I expect that those that are invoved in this sort of thing are unlikely to publish examples of their successes or failures.
I think I have found an example of an experimental situation where this was done though. The reason I say "think" is that I am unwilling to provide my financial details to the "Journal of Applied Physics" so that I can get access to the full article titled "Magnetic imaging on a spin-stand" but one of you might be more trusting.
From the article blurb: It is demonstrated that the image reconstruction can be performed by using the response function characterization of the MR head and the specially designed deconvolution technique, which yields the curl-free field producing component of magnetization.
The technique developed is illustrated by the sample examples of imaging of overwritten tracks with small misregistrations. Important to note is that the article dates back to and in the above para there is mention of "small misregistrations".
If this is indeed the case then recovery as I described in my post and as mentioned in the blurb is not possible on "modern" drives, whatever that may mean. No, super-top-secret data recovery tools don't exist.
And even if they did, they can't be used anyway. Because if they were, the tool would no longer be super-top-secret. I recommend Eraser from personal experience: Actually they do, depending on what you class as 'publish'.
Gromit's in the industry, wrote that article, and if you want verification you can find him on OCAU I am not sure if he also posts here. He's been happy to go on the record multiple times that a single pass is enough. I have too have never been able to recover any data from a drive that have a single pass erase.
Used several applications, getdataback, ontrack easyrecover, r-studio. All unsuccessful after a single complete pass overwrite. I was appalled at the misinformation in that article and wrote them a detailed a response.
They wanted to print it, but my employer wouldn't allow it to go ahead. That'd be right, not only can't we believe all we read on the internet or in the paper, but we can't trust the journalism we read in the popular press.
I'd have liked to have seen a response to the article that was published if it was realy that wide of the mark. Shame about your boss. Yeah, I agree but I wasn't bothered. People like to believe what they want and think they can recover data from any drive.
Data is packed too close, the tracks are very close together and the tracks have to be very precise or you contaminate crosstalk the adjacent tracks. If you put the head off to the edge of the track to read so called residual data from previous writes then you run the risk of reading a signal so weak it is unreliable or more likely, totally unreadable.
Also the current data on the track would be so strong it would swamp any data at the edge of a track. We know drives are digital but at this level, the head reading the track, they are all analogue.

I don't want to do damage to my computer while thinking everything I do is good and ' so secure '. The Department of Defense had somewhere in a manual years ago that said something like passes. One pass is all that's needed.
SSD have something similar, but it just tells all the blocks to go to a zero electron state. However, this will use up one life cycle of the entire ssd drive. I guess that's the price to have a clear conscience.
That Gutmann method is ridiculous and overkill. Even Gutmann says that. The part about "magnetic force microscopes" to recover data is a stretch. Hard drive surfaces get degradation and change all the time from the data written over and over.
Even if you could look at the surface and spend the time and money to do it block by block. Funny that list of tools they had on the Wiki had no mention of Microsoft's cipher that's already in Windows. Not to mention the command: There is also a command that you can issue to your drive so that it will erase itself: Secure Erase - http: If you send me messages, per Bleeping Computer's Forum policy, I will not engage in a conversation, but try to answer your question in the relevant forum post.
If you don't want this, don't send me messages. Peter Gutmann's paper covered encoding methods to write the bits to the magnetic surface that are no longer used by modern drives. This is an urban legend — you only need to wipe a drive once.
I don't like the term urban legend. I believe Gutmann's paper was relevant when it was published. Posted 23 December - Here's an interesting read Programs employ a variety of techniques to overwrite data.
In Gutmann asserted that it might be possible to recover overwritten data and proposed a pass approach for assured sanitization Gutmann However, a single overwriting pass is now viewed as sufficient for sanitizing data from ATA drives with capacities over 15 GB that were manufactured after NIST Cipher program by default will wipe a pass of 0's pass of F's and a pass of random in compliance to the DoD standard established in
