I seem to be finding conflicting answers when I search. Win 7, 8 and 10 all support TRIM, which makes secure overwrite deletion of files unnecessary and redundant for most users. Using secure overwriting of files and empty space on a TRIM enabled SSD is a waste of time, power and write cycles, even if your device is warranted for 's of GB per day for 3 or 5 years.

Ccleaner wipe free space on ssd - Windows ccleaner download windows 7 64 bit you player para

I've used CCleaner to automate disposal of old temp files and browser caches for years on my SSDs with no ill effect. That's where it's really most helpful, pointing out files you had no idea were there taking up space.

CCleaner's secure overwriting won't even work correctly on SSDs because of the way their firmware and wear leveling works. The SSD firmware will actually write to a different free location when you overwrite a file, and does not immediately erase or overwrite that original file until TRIM or firmware housekeeping kicks in at some later time - and even then, tests have shown that some model SSD's firmware does not actually wipe the file internally.

SSDs operate differently from magnetic hard drives in ways that make "sanitizing" the raw data difficult. That creates other problems: For most people who want to use CCleaner as an everyday maintenance tool as opposed to someone using it prep their system for disposal, CCleaner's Secure file deletion and Wipe Free Space features are mostly unnecessary.

Ccleaner wipe free space on ssd - Windows ccleaner download windows 7 64 bit you player para

IMHO, the only instances of where these features may be of use is if, after running CC, your computer is physically stolen, or seized by government law agencies, or a jealous spouse with computer forensic skills is going to spy on you.

I don't really see a good reason to turn these 2 features on, myself - regardless of whether you're running an SSD or regular rotating platter HDD. There's lots of abstraction going on because sectors and data segments are not guaranteed to be contiguous as they can be on HDDs, and unless a file deletion tool can bypass the firmware of the SSD it's not going to wipe a file any more effectively than a TRIM command from the OS freeing up the now unused space of a deleted file.

Running the ocassional Defrag isnt gonna do any measurable harm. Modern SSDs don't work the same way that we are used to with traditional hard drives. I found CCleaner very useful to clean all unnecessary data on a hard drive and wipe out free space.

But what makes it different from normal delete to secure delete, and I wonder what it will do on hard drive for secure delete and to wipe out on free space? If I use secure delete option very often to delete data or wipe free space option, will it damage hard drive in the long run or will it reduce the life time of hard disk?

A traditional mechanical hard drive will lose a small amount of life span, but it's so negligible that it really doesn't matter at all. Doing this on a SSD, however, makes absolutely no sense. Not only will it decrease the lifespan of the disk although TRIM is supposed to help a little with that, but modern computer forensics are not even applicable to SSDs since they operate in totally different ways read this article for more info.

In all honesty, unless you are an extremely paranoid person that worries if their computer were physically stolen, someone might recover stuff you deleted, i don't think you need to worry about secure delete.

What it does is simply zero out the part of the drive where the data was residing, effectively scrubbing the remains of the file. In most cases, when a file is deleted from a drive, the drive simply MARKS the area of the drive clear, but if you used data recovery tools before the computer used that space to write a different file, you could get the file back.

Ccleaner wipe free space on ssd - Windows ccleaner download windows 7 64 bit you player para

Secure delete simply overwrites those file remains. It could be argued that yes this will shorten the life of the drive, while others would say you are crazy. I feel if the drive's life would be shortened by it, the time would be negligible at best, but it's up to you, it shouldn't hurt it anymore than a trip to the corner gas station would hurt your car.

I guess I have no empirical evidence to show to you, but knowing what we do about how traditional Defrag software works and how modern SSD's firmware works, the two are not really compatible, and therefore I wouldn't do it, and if I wouldn't do it, I wouldn't advocate that someone else do it either. Data that is not allocated to any files or folders is overwritten three times and permanently removed. This can take a long time if you are overwriting a large amount of free space.

So, essentially, cipher wrote over the free space old files on your hard drive three times to make sure no one could ever scan your hard drive and recover the data you deleted from it. This is normal as mentioned in the steps above and the space will be freed again.

We are aware that CCleaner was hacked. However, it was the bit version 5. The company has since acknowledged the issue and fixed it to the point that we feel comfortable now recommended them still.

That said, be sure you update to the latest version. CCleaner is still a useful and reliable tool. There are two versions of CCleaner, free and paid. The feature that wipes the free space on your hard drive is available in the free version, so that will do just fine.

Choose Free Space Only from the Wipe drop-down list. Be very careful when making this selection. Select the type of overwrite procedure you want from the Security drop-down list.

Simple Overwrite is fine for most situations. However, if you want CCleaner to behave like the cipher command, select Advanced Overwrite 3 passes. Finally, select the drive on which you want to securely wipe the free space in the Drives box and click Wipe.

Another option for making sure your deleted data cannot be recovered is to delete your files and folders securely in the first place. Eraser is a free, advanced security tool for Windows that allows you to securely delete data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns, like the cipher command and CCleaner.

The difference is you can do this when you delete the files and folders, not after. You can also securely wipe the free space on your hard drive to be extra safe. When you download Eraser and install it, an option is added to the context right-click menu in File Explorer.

Instead of deleting files and folders normally by pressing the Delete key, sending them to the recycle bin, and then emptying the recycle bin, you can use Eraser directly in File Explorer to securely delete files and folders.

What do you use to securely wipe the free space on your hard drive? Or is this brand new information? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. If not, what would be the command line for, say, the D: E for the E Drive etc….

The heads of the hard drive do not touch the surfaces until bumped when running The magnetic materials can change back and forth endlessly. Hard drives generally, die in an early stage of life defect or they live as long as the moving mechanical parts of them would survive for.

If there is no UPS for the computer, it would increase the chances of a minor corruption on power loss, doing unnessisary writing. On the other hand, depending on the OS, something like windows can be writing all the time needlessly, so who cares, it would not change anything: Once the clusters are marked for deletion, they will be overwritten soon enough, when new data comes in and writes into those spaces.

Overwriting 7 times is overdoing the whole idea, doing a single overwrite on a stable system, should not change any life expectancy of the drive. One overwrite is enough to hide the data even from higher end recovery or forensics.

How many times does a person make misteaks vrses how many times other people are trying to mess with them.
